Surfer 1 Sculpture

This Paddleboarder is part of a series of drawings of watersports that I have been drawing for the last 5 years. It was inspired by numerous trips to my local beach in Perth and sketches made in situ then transferred at the studio onto various wooden surfaces. I was making cutouts with a client who has Downs and decided to produce my own earlier this year. I hope viewers will enjoy the home made quality of this piece and might find a memory of childhood crafting in its form. I would like to remind them of their younger days through this simple project. I chose plywood because it is readily available and not a rare timber requiring lengthy finessing. My primary interest is in drawing not sculpting so this form allows the play of drawing full expression. The subject matter is something I am fascinated by never having learnt to surf myself I enjoy observing others at play in the water.
