This is a sculpture of Temmincks ground pangolin on the move. It is so characteristic to see them walking on their two hind feet, front feet folded in front of them. They look like an old merchant on the prowl in a market. Pangolins are such gentle creatures, and they do seem to have this very quirky character. Their scales are used for protection from predators, and they curl into a ball when threatened, making it almost impossible to penetrate. Their main predator has turned out to be man, who prizes them for their meat and the medicinal qualities of their keratin scales (much the same as Rhino horn). They are therefore on the endangered list.
