About The Artwork

Up until the early 1900’s “Jewish art” was forbidden by the Bible and Talmudic tradition. This piece pays homage to the Children of Israel; their traditions, community, symbolism and ceremonial objects. It is a small wooden cabinet with copper handles on the outside. The doors should remain open. Inside, the cabinet contains faces from the community which should never be forgotten; the tenement houses from the 1800's—small and crowded but full of love and tradition; a pomegranate, which is the symbol of righteousness, fruitfulness, knowledge and wisdom; prayer scrolls placed upon the Western Wall; potion vials that represent healing and protection; and a giant iron key that unlocks further mysteries of Jewish mysticism.
