The Chinese Dragon Sculpture

"The Chinese Dragon" is an assemblage sculpture, and the primary material is driftwood, as all my pieces are. Other materials found in nature are used to complete the piece. Ultimately inspired by nature itself, my work combines flora and fauna, with a touch of stone. In this sculpture, the fauna is a folklore creature and in the Chinese dragon's case, the burl head piece was found first, with a matching body found a few months later. It's worth the wait if I can produce a quality representation of the subject matter. Actual assembly time for this piece took roughly 3 months due to the wide variety and nature of the materials, along with the delicate process involved. Prior to assembly, all parts go through a process of cleaning and heat treatment, and upon completion the piece is finished with a sealant. "The Chinese Dragon" uses the following materials for construction. Driftwood is used for the torso, feet, and the inspirational foundation for this piece, the burl head. Other materials used are small spruce cone thigh pieces, milkweed and teasel on the neck, pine and spruce cone scales for various uses throughout the piece, walnut shell shoulders, bone teeth and nasal flares. The eyes are cut and shaped from Ontario moonstone feldspar stones. My art embodies nature, in form and substance, a perfect harmony of her greatest creations. As with all my mythical pieces like this dragon, I hope to take your thoughts from reality into fantasy.
