The Engagement Sculpture

Our daughter was getting engaged at the time I did this sculpture which celebrates their new relationship. And, thinking back, I recalled my own excitement on getting engaged twenty years earlier, riding buses over bumpy roads back and forth to be with each other on Wintry weekends. In the sculpture, it is hard to tell who is most thrilled, the young lady on the man’s lap, receiving his gigantic engagement ring, or the excited male to have bethrothed a mate. His hormones are active, as shown by his hirsute chest. The sculpture's two sides, front and back , are identical; thus the sculpture can be viewed from all sides.The couple balances magically atop a tall, one-legged wooden base, suggestive of the precarious nature of relationships. The upright 4” x 6” x 3’ high base fits into a heavy 2’x 2’ x half-inch-thick piece of steel on which the title of the sculpture and artist's name is written.
