The Golden Mean - A Constant Strife for Balance Sculpture

“The golden mean in ethics, as in physics, is the centre of the system and that about which all revolve.” ― Henry David Thoreau Either too much or too little, both extremes are dangerous. They pull us like gravity and therefore it is far easier to be on the extremes. No effort needed, the gravity of passion naturally takes its course. But it is the pull between these two extremes where you can find balance, stability and discipline. Moderation then, is the secret of wisdom and happiness. It does not mean mediocrity, rather it is an elaborate balancing act, a feat of the intellectual skill demanding constant vigilance. The Cosmos is balanced. Man the microcosm, Universe the macrocosm. For balance we need a constant reminder to avoid the extremes in all spheres of life. It is like a constant state of awareness and judgement, a never ending fight with two strong forces at the same time. But the fight is absolutely worth it because this fight is virtuous.
