The demise of The Great Auk is documented in Elizabeth Kolbert's book "The Sixth Extinction". Reading about the brutal killing of thousands of flightless birds simply for their feathers left me with a helpless feeling about our stewardship of the planet. The sculpture is a conversation starter and a rebuke of mindless consumerism.

I share my excitement by carving the stone into an asbstract shape that balances delicately at an impossible angle to force the viewer to reexamine their assumptions about the physical world.
