After a decade of building large-scale, ephemerial sculpture, I have decided to take my work in a completely new direction and concentrate on creating smaller, figurative and abstract sculpture in bronze and stainless steel.
It hasn’t been easy.
At first the transition was incredibly slow with many failures. But now I find my forms are growing and morphing. Each one with its own strength and personality as I develop a style which is my own.
My work is often unplanned.
I rarely set out to build anything specific preferring instead to let my fingers and the sculpting wax compose the shapes through intuition which is usually dependant on my mood. It’s a magical moment when the subconscious takes over and my fingers work in collaboration with my visual sensibilities and emotional state. Growth of the form is fast and spontaneous.
My practice often explores the dichotomy between strength and weakness, the feeling of vulnerability verses inner strength and determination. I try to find a balance in-between which may trigger an emotional response with the viewer.
Life is full of contradictions and this is a major influence on my work. When it all comes together, it’s tremendously exciting.
No better feeling.
