The Storyteller Sculpture

I dreamt that I had octuplets and in the dream I was relaxed and calm and all the babies were quiet and happy! Impossible on many levels but the dream was so vivid that i needed to make this character, although i had no idea what she would end up looking like. Starting from a dream state and working from the unconscious is my favourite way of working and Miriam the storyteller is the result. She is both serene and eerie, with a strong presence and command of a room.I chose to make her out of fabric and the figures from my adaptation of the technique of stumpwork embroidery because of the femininity of these mediums. She is a powerful but soft character and I wanted to put a lot of time and care into making the 'children', hence my choice of a very labour intensive technique. I chose blue chiffon for her dress because, for me, blue signifies water, flow but also melancholy.
