Titus Sculpture

This is a piece where the concept of form preceded the input from the materials. I had just discovered a quarry in Arizona that extracted black marble and was on my way to check it out while delivering a commission to California. While driving, as I often do, I played out a form in my head with black marble transected with an illuminated strip of white marble. When I arrived at the quarry the first piece of black stone I found was exactly the size and shape needed for my daydream. They call this Orca Marble for the black with white inclusions and almost everyone who sees it sees something of a whale nature in it.
