Cosmic Bloom: Iconography for a re-imagined world order
2017
Concept Note:
I’m presently exploring new archetypes or perhaps revisiting forgotten mythologies as a
response to the several inter-connected and tangential issues surrounding sustainability,
consumption, geology and ecology. I'm referencing subtle dichotomies while alluding to the
power of empathy, resilience and nurture. This iconography proposes an eco-centric world
order as an antidote to the current trend of anthropocentrism.
Butterflies, one of the leitmotifs in this body of work, are considered as bio-indicators of
the health of an eco-system. They are highly sensitive creatures and react immediately to
even subtle changes in the environment. They are the first ones to leave if a particular
habitat becomes unsustainable.
The Biosphere sculptures on the other hand engage with the idea of how we see the earth
itself in our daily musings. Unlike a typical globe these objects are shorn of all markings
and territorial demarcations alluding to a primordial time of pure potential. In the Cosmic
Bloom sculptures a hybrid of the egg, nest, seed and pod emerges which is at once familiar
as well as intriguing. Oscillating between human-centric and elemental imagery I attempt
to strike a balance between what is and what could be.
This body of work consists of sculpture, installations and video art and is a thematic
continuation of my two earlier series titled Golden Bough and other stories from the landfill
(2015) and Future Fossils (2016).

Romicon Revola a.k.a Romi is a contemporary visual artist who divides her time between India and Italy. Primarily a sculptor, she has also experimented with a variety of other media. Her work encompasses monumental public sculpture, installation, painting, video and digital art. In her large-scale outdoor sculptures installed in public spaces and tech campuses in India, Romi has appropriated the stainless steel material, often considered either industrial or masculine, to weave narratives of feminine musings. In Bangalore, India, her work is installed at SAP Labs, Bosch, Hilton hotel, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Kochi International Airport. She is the recipient of the 2019 CIMA INFOSYS Award and the 2019 KWAA Women Achievers’ Award. Her video “Ocean within a drop” was screened at the Birmingham Art Summit at MAC in the UK on World Water Day in 2018. Her functional art collaboration with sustainable Indian fashion brand Aranyani was showcased at the New York Fashion Week in the spring of 2018. She has exhibited in several important exhibitions in India, USA and Singapore.
