VIEW IN MY ROOM
Wheel thrown, off-white pitcher/jug, illustrated and sgraffito by hand a trout, fisherman, fishing flies (note this is an original piece of work, no transfers, decals etc are used). The jug is finished with an all-over clear glaze, it was fired twice in my kiln to over 1100 degrees centigrade. The material I used was terracotta clay, white slip and coloured underglazes and slips, the glaze is lead-free. It is very much a natural, handmade and rustic piece, ideal for a country cottage setting or dresser. The finish is smooth, though in some areas, a little sgraffito texture may be felt (which adds to the tactile qualities of the piece). One of my great loves was fishing and fly-fishing for trout in Devon and Somerset are some of my happiest memories, I hope some of that joy comes through in this handmade and illustrated piece. Fishing is a theme I come back to from time to time, but each piece of pottery is always different. Ideal for flowers or floral decoration, as a centrepiece or indeed, as a functional water jug.

Much of my work starts on the pottery wheel, I throw my shapes then design and illustrate with slips and underglazes onto the leather-hard clay. I produce a lot of custom work based upon people's lives, animals and home countries. I have sent private commissions all over the world including to Japan, South Korea, Switzerland, Germany, USA and Canada. I started my ceramics with figurative sculpture, moved into functional stoneware and onto entirely illustrated work. I started to take inspiration from my dog, Uly, the trees, forests and landscape of Kent. It was at this point I really started to appreciate the stories behind other people's dogs and the lives we share with them. People sent me pictures of their own dogs, I started to see the wolf in even the smallest dog, to appreciate the fearlessness of each creature, the support and companionship every dog gives its master. I live and work in the beautiful county of Kent (the Garden of England) at the foot of the North Downs, just beneath the historic Pilgrim's Way. Henry VIII's houses of Hever Castle (Ann Boleyn's childhood home) and Knole are nearby, and I'm not that far from Sissinghurst (Vita Sackville-West's former home with its famous White Garden).
