back detail
Book Art sculpture featuring hand-embroidery, machine applique, handpainted buffalo bone tiles, offloom beaded vines, acrylic ink on linen and cotton, ink transfer, and digital print on fabric.

Inspired by two Burmese jade buttons I collected years ago, Wuxia films and graphic novels, Chinese romance novels, and Korean historical dramas, this small book opens to 14 fabric pages richly decorated with hand and machine-sewn details, digital prints of vintage porcelain and cloisonné I've collected from thrift stores, and hand-drawn ink paintings.

Original prose embroidered on pages: 'Two jade buttons / clasp silken sleeves / around sturdy wrists / under white fur robes / against the winter night / of pine-clad hills / in the Iron Tiger's kingdom'.

Covers of painted and wood-burned Brazil Cherry are bound in a linen and waxed polyester tape binding, with accent cords of braided, waxed gray-green polyester cord, glass, bone, porcelain, jade, and moss agate beads.

Colorway: green brown, white, tan, beige, blue.

Hidden in plain sight in the back: two detachable jade and bone cufflinks I made from the original jade buttons, handcarved bone toggles, and knotted waxed polyester.

I've been making OOAK and limited edition book art sculptures since 1997, with work shown in coffee table books from Quarry Press and Lark Books, in national juried exhibitions, Bead & Button Magazine, and three book arts galleries (Vamp & Tramp Booksellers, 23 Sandy Gallery, and Abecedarian Gallery). My work is collected by private and corporate collectors, and by the special collections libraries of over 13 major universities.

I'm pleased to finally show some of my over 300+ pieces on SaatchiArt.

Why book art? It's the exact opposite of 'big art for big houses'. It's intimate bling for a bookshelf or office desk, a handheld vacation reached by simply opening a cover.

Typically 5-7 business days for domestic shipments, 10-14 business days for international shipments.

I create art under the name Marian Crane (go ahead, I'm immune to the inevitable jokes because I adore Hitchcock movies.) I write and blog under the names Crane Hana, M. Crane Hana, and M. C. Hana (but they're all me, really.) I was born in northwestern New Mexico, and grew up surrounded by the spectacular landscapes, colors, and cultural blends of the American Southwest. My mixed-media paintings, fiber collages, wearable art, jewelry, and book art sculptures are inspired by my love of history, science, folk art, myth, and invention. I am fascinated with the human tendency to mix ornament and function. Since I’m a theatrical prop and artifact geek, too, I love making objects that appear as if they came out of a ‘real’ fantasy or science-fiction culture.
