UNTO DUST is an ongoing series of sculptures all based on a simple clay model of a solitary man lost in thought. The subject matter of these sculptures is an exploration of how as human beings we attempt to reconcile our instinct for survival with our inevitable decay. I produced the copper sculptures from a mould of the clay model using an electroforming technique that dates from the 19th century. It’s a lengthy but rewarding process. The variations of texture and colour in the copper produce fascinating and pleasingly unpredictable results. These variations in each individual sculpture inform other subtle adjustments that I then make to the position of their bodies reflecting shifts in attitude and emotion. Over time the resulting works will form a collection of sculptures that are closely related but each one is unique. More figures from the series will be uploaded soon.
