I find myself thinking a lot about Scott McCloud’s concept of “amplification through simplification” from his book Understanding Comics. In my wire portraits I strive to achieve this amplification, through selection of the elements of the face that really embody the spirit of the person. Often less is more. In my process I make and make and make, learning from each draft as I get closer to what makes my subject truly themselves - sometimes it’s the angle of the eyes, or tilt of the lips. With each portrait I make, I learn more and get closer. It's not a platonic ideal of a person that I strive for, but something in the individual person themselves - their own inner world of Forms. Drawing from mid century modern and the feeling of Matisse and Picasso, I combine aesthetic investigation with the feeling and flow of Barry McGee and Parra. Modern and contemporary art, street art, comics, and more influence my practice. Created from a live model, this was the second piece in a series of progressively more abstract portraits. Hand bent from one continuous piece of 16 gauge wire Comes with my personal certificate of authenticity. Best Regards, Duncan Sherwood-Forbes

Since 2006 Sherwood-Forbes has used wire to investigate the boundary between sculpture and drawing, using sinuous curving lines to draw through the air and carve negative space into figures and portraits. With work ranging from the minuscule to larger than life, Sherwood-Forbes’ work has brought joy to collectors for almost 20 years. When not creating his wire sculpture, Sherwood-Forbes teaches workshops and experiments with a wide range of media encompassing ceramics, poetry, drawing, and performance. He will be residing in California's Bay Area through the end of 2024.
