I am an artist based in London. I am invariably drawn to art works in exhibitions where the puzzle for me is to ascertain how they were made, where things are not as they seem. I enjoy trying to establish the processes and this is reflected in the works that I make. I have always been experimental in my making, embracing the chance to use unusual, non-painterly materials in my works such as fabric, stitching and resin. Though they resemble paintings, the objects that I fabricate frequently eschew direct brushwork, using techniques such as staining, dripping, printing and sewing as ways of mark making. Indeed paint may not have been used in the creative process at all. Introducing an element of uncertainty is important to me, using methods to establish a degree of separation between the work and myself by relinquishing control, letting the materials follow their tendencies. A process of reasserting my authority follows this. My work usually involves some sort of construction, a process where I have to logically think through and reason a way of developing and building the work.
