W40 Sculpture

Wall sculpture Materials; papier-maché, cardboard,wood, paint I have tried to make a strong wall sculpture with almost only relief and only tones of grey and white. It is made of many layers of paper and cardboard, glued and stapled together. Despite the fact that the work is not colourful, I almost see the relief as an undulating landscape of space. The relief gives me a truly physical interaction that stands out against the flat surface of the wall without quickly becoming a decoration. Leopold van de Vens wall relief works are a testament to his appreciation for shred and paste collage. Applying the building-from-parts methodology, the Dutch artist mixes his own material from scratch. Shredded cardboard and newspaper, papier mache and the odd bit of white paint resolved in a recycled canvas; not quite a drawing of marks and only gently asserting its lumpy surface as sculptural. Bleached neutral in palette and attached to an equally pale gallery wall, these solid, yet soft looking things comment on the white cube space seemingly coming out of, as opposed to within the space in which they are installed. Maintaining the care and deliberation of van de Vens more traditionally formal works, these wall relief works start to speak on their own terms. (Review "Art Review")
