I made this circular wall hanging in June 2022 during a heat wave, which is reflected in my colour palette. What started out as a simple exercise in colour and shape and a means to use up some beautiful scraps, evolved into an exploration of memory. I was struck one morning by my baby wiggling his feet while I was tickling him and how lovely it was to experience that, but already feeling sharp pangs as I thought of my future self trying vainly to recapture that delicious moment. Looking at this piece and the ghostly white shapes, I am reminded how a memory of something is simply remembering the last time you remembered it, a reflection of a reflection of a reflection of a reflection. At the back, you will see my hand sewn signature as an extra flourish. Dimensions: 82x83cm Display notes: this wall hanging comes with a hand sewn hanging sleeve. All you have to do to beautifully display your new piece of art is purchase a plastic, metal or wooden rod from a building supply shop, have them cut it 4cm longer than the hanging sleeve and either hang over sturdy nails, or screw in screw eyes at each end and hang these over nails. The hanging hardware is invisible when viewed from the front.

My name is Lila Chatfield and I am an artist focused on quilts and occasionally ceramics and painting, living in Brighton, UK. My colourful hand sewn wall hangings are narrative and expressive in style, embracing a contemporary folk aesthetic. Thematically, my work germinates from mundane happenings and often explores stories of mental states, cognitive dissonance and the edges of birth and death.I draw upon current popular culture, worldwide events and the wilderness of dreams to compose my work which features both abstract and figurative details. I play in an intuitive, improvisational way, often with discarded or vintage cloth and found objects. The boundaries of what is and isn’t a quilt are blurred in my work, which often features sculptural elements. My wall hangings are almost completely hand sewn, imbuing them with an organic feel that embraces the joy of the imperfect and the unexpected. A self-taught artist, I studied English and American Studies at the University of Sussex and worked as a secondary English teacher and later as an education officer before dedicating my time to my art practice.
