ABOUT THE ARTWORK

In 2016 I had to print 540 pages of documents, including more than 300 pages of tax forms in order to apply for a green card to be able to stay close to the person I loved. I found no better use for these printed taxes than to dip them into the clay slip and burn them in the kiln 8 years later. The scar on the vase encapsulates the immigrant’s experience through the ruins of pseudo-rocks, wire, glaze drops, and tax forms. The perfectly round shape of the moon jar that bubbled after the firing reveals the underlying traumas of adaptation that are sometimes not evident until later.

Hi! I'm Maria Loram, a ceramic artist from LA. I create bud vases, textured vessels, and sculptures using a blend of wheel-thrown and handbuilding techniques. My creations, ranging from functional objects to art pieces, draw inspiration from the mysteries of the cosmos, the laws of the universe, and the philosophy of non-duality. Through my work, I explore the balance of form and function, embodying the serene aesthetics of minimalism in each piece.
