ABOUT THE ARTWORK
2020 / Acrylic and gouache on a wooden artisan mask (the carving of the wood was done by a Guatemalan artisan). This mask includes 9 yarn pompoms (each 4 inches diameter approximately) and 2 small pompoms (each 2 inches diameter approximately), all the pompoms are colorful but will be randomly delivered so the colors may change. The mask alone is 11 H x 7.5 W x 4 D inches, plus the size of the pompoms that can be arrange as you wish. The approximate size of the mask with pompoms is 23 H x 10 W x 8 D inches. (for reference see the second picture). The size of the total piece may change accordingly to how you arrange the pompoms. This is my own version of the traditional mask used for the dance "Baile de Moros" in Guatemala. I also include the pompoms as some kind of installation because they are often used in the mayan attires and headpieces, so my piece is a celebration of Guatemalan culture.
