My sculptures are drawn from memory, imagination and visual reference, using elements of ocean plant and animal biology and anatomy, to create forms that play with reality. I invite you to look, engage your imagination, and form your own narrative about the beautifully strange form. I have always been fascinated by Giant Clams. They are weird creatures that are half animal and half plant, that live in shells and extend their fleshy mantles like solar panels to catch the sun rays and take over 100 years to grow. I work exclusively in clay as it is so direct and I love using my hands to sculpt, mould and shape the material. I love to explore different glaze finishes and spend much time trialling different glazes and seeing how they will interact with each other. Each glaze was selected to evoke the marine environment, a nod to the visual reference that inspired the piece. This (not so) Giant Clam is modelled using stoneware clay and decorated with an interesting brown glaze that produces green spotting when layered thickly…it’s one of my favourites for it’s naturalness and unpredictability. The clam body has been left as white clay and coated with a clear glaze - I’ve flecked oxide and Celadon glaze through it to add a touch of delicate colour. It’s name is simply a direct reflection of what it is, but as you spend time looking at it you notice the beautiful glaze colours. The piece is small and is designed to be picked-up, looked at and turned over in your hands. Ultimately I want you to care about our marine life. I hope by making something beautiful, I can form a connection and inspire to protect our beautiful oceans, the life-support system of our planet.
