ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Recently I found myself back home and decided to spend some time at Laumeier Sculpture Park walking around visiting old friends. I came across Beverly Pepper's piece, Alpha from 1974 and realized this work has been subconsciously influencing my work and ideas for decades, so I returned to my studio to pay proper homage. The title is taken from the lyrics New York State of Mind, by Billy Joel. Visually these forms work together; they interact and share the space in a game of visual balance but do not fit together at at all. Thrown and altered cone 6 porcelain, oxidation fired, sandblasted surface.

I explore the complexities of interpersonal relationships; specifically the spatial and supposed interaction between two or more persons caught in a single moment of time. Through the process of breaking down and deconstructing the figure into smaller more intimate aspects of a bodies posture the emphasis is redirected to the non descript area between, creating a permanent shifting state of tension.
