Sanja Chulakovska is a contemporary abstract artist and experienced conservator-restorer whose practice is rooted in more than three decades of engagement with fine art. Born in Skopje, North Macedonia, and currently based in Sarasota, Florida, she brings together a European academic foundation, extensive museum experience, and an intuitive contemporary approach to painting.
From 2002 to 2021, she worked at the Museum of the City of Skopje, where her professional practice included the conservation and restoration of icons, frescoes, easel paintings, and works of cultural heritage. This deep understanding of material, surface, time, and transformation continues to inform her contemporary work.
Her abstract paintings explore the space between matter and light, movement and stillness, presence and absence. Through layered color, open space, fluid passages, and decisive gestural marks, she creates compositions that invite emotional and personal interpretation. Rather than offering fixed narratives, her work creates space for the viewer to experience and question.
“I don’t paint answers. I create space for questions.”
Faculty of Fine Arts, Ss. Cyril and Methodius University, Skopje, North Macedonia — Fine Arts, Painting, Graphic Arts and Sculpture. Degree awarded 2002.
