"I do not photograph nature; I photograph the way it lingers in memory."

August Langhout is a Dutch contemporary visual artist working at the intersection of photography and painting.

His work explores atmosphere, memory and transformation, using nature as a starting point for images that feel remembered rather than simply observed. Water, forests, flowers and coastlines become fluid spaces in which familiar forms dissolve and re-emerge.

Through long exposure, multiple exposure and digital layering, Langhout moves beyond photographic documentation. Reflections, contours and fragments of landscape are transformed into dreamlike images that exist between landscape, abstraction and painting. Colour becomes a carrier of emotion, while repetition and layering evoke the way memories change over time.

His work asks a simple question: how does nature remain within us after the moment itself has disappeared?

Born and raised in Friesland, in the north of the Netherlands, Langhout's visual language is deeply influenced by the vast Dutch landscape and its constantly changing light.

Photography — Independent Study & Professional Development
Photography has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. Over the years, I have developed my photographic skills through independent practice and specialized photography courses, with a focus on photographic technique, image-making and creative development.

Since 2022, my photographic practice has taken a more deliberate artistic direction. Rather than simply photographing the world as I observe it, I began creating and constructing my own visual worlds, using photography as a medium for atmosphere, memory and transformation.

Fotofabryk, Leeuwarden — Annual Photography Programme
I am currently participating in an intensive year-long photography programme at Fotofabryk in Leeuwarden, focused on developing a personal visual language through a series of photographic assignments, critical reflection and experimentation.

As part of the programme, I am completing a year-long photographic assignment under the guidance of established Dutch photographer. This ongoing programme provides a deeper exploration of photographic practice, concept development and the relationship between intention, image and personal expression.
