Laura Baker

I was born in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, 1982. I currently live and work in New York City. In 1998 my family and I moved to Panama City, Panama, the year when the United States turned the Canal over to the Panamanians. Our new home is a house within a reverted military compound, a re-purposed structure with a new layer of meaning. Growing up through changes like these has allowed me to address questions of cultural displacement in my art. My compositions are fueled by culture shock and draw inspiration from folklore, the divides of social class, and patterns. I am interested in the concepts of home, exile, presence, absence and acculturation.
