Britt Hayes

Britt seeks out her inspiration on meandering trips through the city and beyond, faithfully carrying her sketchbook and paint palette to impromptu sites. Building on the tradition of plein air painting, her small format works weave a tapestry of colors and textures, often capturing the competing fields of the manmade environment and natural world. Oscillating between figurative detail and flowing abstraction, each piece exists on a continuum between drawing and painting. Hayes brings the malleability of human perception into focus with her rapid sketch strokes. These works live in-the-moments of the serendipitous excursions through which they are made.

Hayes currently lives in Los Angeles, California.

Hayes received a Bachelor of Arts at the University of California, Berkeley (2001-2005) where she was awarded the Departmental Citation for her contribution to the architecture department. After completing her architectural apprenticeship at Fuse Architects in San Francisco, she returned to school at Yale University (2010-2013) where she received a Masters of Architecture. As a graduate student, she was awarded a Selected Professions Fellowship by the American Association of University Women. Throughout her academic career, she has pursued an emphasis in architectural design and grounded her creative studies with fine art coursework.
