Using the unconventional approach of painting perpendicular to the canvas, established artist Peter G. Buchan harnesses the power of gravity to drip industrial enamel paint from chopsticks.

Buchan calls it “a system of gravity and imperfection.”

This innovative technique he pioneered has taken drip art to a whole new frontier, creating as much confusion as accolades by the art critics.

Since drip painting (using oil base paint) has generally been associated with abstract expressionism, art judges have often misclassified his art as “mixed media” because of its hybrid nature and textured appearance.

Buchan’s current endeavor is to run a series of workshops and promote this misunderstood art form by teaching others what it took him 10 years to develop. “It would be great to evolve this art form, and see where other people can take it,” Buchan explained.

Raised in the high desert of Winnemucca, Nevada, the artist was inspired by nature and has been painting since the age of 7. He comes from a family of artists, and honed his skills through rigorous self-teaching -- learning sculpture, acrylics and drawing. As a prolific artist, he continues to paint new pieces for solo and group exhibits, commission work, and juried...

This Chopstick Drip Painting technique Buchan pioneered took more than 10 years to develop.

Buchan developed this technique after studying and creating art his entire life. His parents, John and Willie, loved art and considered it a family value. They encouraged their seven children to study the classics, explore different artistic disciplines and practice, practice, practice. Though Buchan did not attend art school, he honed his skills through rigorous self-teaching, learning sculpture, acrylics and drawing.

Exhibitions to be announced shortly.
