Burak Bulut Yildirim

I'm Burak Bulut Yıldırım, a photographer, artist, and curator based in Berlin and working internationally. I began in Istanbul as an arts journalist before photography became my primary language, and I opened my first studio there in 2005. Since then I have also mentored more than 5,000 photography students.

My practice begins where the body stops being only a subject and becomes a medium. Again and again, my work returns to the moment a body begins to dissolve into what surrounds it: a figure left alone in a room merging with its light and emptiness (Niche), a body returning to nature until skin and landscape become one (Ecotone), movement and time turning into space (Motus), fluorescent pigment under ultraviolet light making the body its own source of light (Lucida), a presence suspended between life and death (Antemortem).

The body is also where inner states become visible. Melancholia reads the weight of melancholy in a bowed head and a body leaning on whatever is near. Crave turns to appetite and pleasure. Elsewhere asks what it means for an unclothed body simply to exist in a street shared with others.
