Candida Slater

I was twelve when I saw Monet’s Waterlilies in the Jeu de Paume in Paris and the power of art first blew my mind. Throughout my life as a diplomat and as the wife of a British Ambassador I followed my passion in the great cities of the world, memorably Lates at the Met and the Frick, which were a revelation that art is also meant to be fun. Back here in London I am spoiled for choice and I can go to see something marvellous every day. My work is therefore very much influenced by the art that is all around me, old and new.
I paint abstracts in acrylic, and I am currently based at Wimbledon Art Studios. I have been creating artworks for twenty-five years, selling mainly to private collectors. My work explores the tension between chaos and control, the constant human need to find patterns, and to capture a glimpse of what lies beyond visible boundaries. Everything is ephemeral and we snatch at beauty and order while we can.
I also make gently satirical mixed media fine art prints, using cut paper images of art, icons and archetypes – plus stickers and emojis –to tell stories about life today (Reasons to be Happy).
