At the heart of an open dialogue between abstraction and figuration, painting of Marie-Jeanne Caprasse defines the terms of a free realism, that breaks the objectivity of representation by the vibrant reinterpretation of its models. Designing his portraits as landscapes, and vice versa, she takes photographs collected over the years for starting points of a spooky naturalism dominated by a feeling of strangeness. Painted with oil, vinyl paint, and more recently pastel, her paintings proceed by superimposing layers, while densifying the material, however, give the impression of a certain evanescence, a lightness that promote loosening of perceptual structures.
Born in 1972 in Liège, Belgium, Marie-Jeanne Caprasse lives and works in Paris.
