William Carpenter- Statement of intent
In approaching a statement of position for my works I look to the social nature of the human experience. I am interested in the various interactions of different cultures and societies as they influence design, colour and concept and story telling.
My work takes into account the influence that the natural world and animals have had and continue to have from past times to present. Having travelled extensively it has been my experience that there are selective colours and tones to every culture. I am particularly interested in ancient art and primitivism.
I have tried to integrate various media types that best illustrates the traditions and the concept of life as a village that resonates in various different ways and flavours.
Individual works incorporate printmaking, painting and photography. My hope is that the viewer is able to assimilate the appropriate level of energy that I have strived to reproduce via various media. The basis of my works incorporate the design, colour and form of various societies be it natural or man-made to tell a story. My use of colour is influenced by tribal and primitive art and the psychology of emotion that such selective use represents.

Instructors of influence include the Finnish-American printmaker Leander Fornas, the American printmaker Friedrich Becker and the American painter Walter Kamys.
Upon finishing studies at UMASS, I was commissioned as a distinguished graduate of studies in the US Army, officer commissioning followed the program. This allowed me to visit locales all over the world and to develop a bigger brush of experience. In the worldwide yearly arts DA competition I have won 2 first place and 2 third place finishes in the printmaking category. I have participated in print workshops that focused on the intaglio process.
