Catherine Rios

My practice, paintings and drawings, is defined by the experimentation of  materials and processes, towards unconventional techniques and  media which question the notion of trace: traces of existence whose photographic aura remains, at the heart of my practice , the matrix. My work as a painter endeavours to restore in its layers and traces the vestige of a human presence which
exposes itself to the eye by materializing the conditions of its survival in this image making. These orphan images (that's how I call them) are photographs of anonymous people, onlookers of another time emerging from an unknown but strangely familiar environment, a no-man's-land of no one and anyone.

My artistic career spans  over thirty years between Paris, Bogota and Strasbourg. A philosopher by training, I have  taught myself different artistic and image media: from photography to painting, including drawing, engraving and film.
