I was born in Calgary, Canada, in 1981. Between 1984 and 1988 I lived in Sumatra, Indonesia. Upon returning to Canada I attended the Waldorf school in Calgary for nine years. The Waldorf method of pedagogy was founded by the Austro-Hungarian artist/philosopher Rudolph Steiner. Steiner believed that children should learn through their own experience rather than through dictation and memorization, and in this way they learn the most important thing to learn, how to learn. There I learned through the arts, for example, by reading a story, and then interpreting it through song or a drawing, which forces you to internalize and thoroughly consider the subject, it's possibilities and it's implications. Most importantly, it empowered me at an early age to nurture my own perspective.
In my work I consider the expectations and implications surrounding predictability and unpredictability. I like imagery that is ambiguous in terms of it's aesthetic, social, political or moral agenda, and asks more than it answers. I think that it is important to look critically at some of the institutions and commonly held notions that are prevalent in our environment, and I like to present opportunities to question our individual relationships with these...
