Giovanna Cecchetti Born: Suffern, New York. My work is very much concerned with formal issues dealing with color, shape, line, and composition as well as with space, time, and the transcendental. I work intuitively, using a process-driven construction of layered geometric marks, within the tradition of formalist abstract painting. Each mark becomes a recorded moment and the layering of these marks breaks the plane, creating a spatial illusion that serves to mutually organize and confuse time.
Visual motifs as metaphors for waves of sound, space/time patterns, information theory and quantum elements reflect upon my ongoing investigation into the correlative aspects of physics and shamanism. What is indisputable in this recent group of paintings is the influences of my experience in the Peruvian Amazon, where I explored various plant medicines indigenous to the jungle. These works are infused with the teachings and visions these plants have gifted to me. These spirit helpers teach about the healing power of sound and song and prayer. Here there are crickets and whispering mermaids, the shaman's Icaros and the rattling of leaves.
Works are available and represented through West Branch Gallery, Stowe, VT; Midland Gallery, Mont...
