I am attracted to the atmosphere of pictures from the 60’s and 70’s. Everyday images of daytrips, get-togethers and family life fascinate me. I use the snapshot sphere, (imperfection, discoloration and nonchalance), of these images as a guide. I retell the stories. I bring back the atmosphere and, as happens with retold tales, I exaggerate a little by altering the discoloration, or “faults”, in composition.
After finishing my studies at the Royal Academy of Art and Design in Den Bosch, I worked as an illustrator, designer and art director for magazines. While working with photo editing programs and more and more “perfect” pictures, I longed for dirty hands and less need for perfection so I started painting again. As I look back I see that I have always been looking for images that tell a story. My paintings are the culmination of my endless search for images that contain the essence of and space for perfect imperfection.
