Chino Ridge

Chino Ridge is a Japanese conceptual artist who has lived and worked in London since 2002. Born into a creative family – her grandfather was a Japanese-style painter and her mother a clay artist – she discovered vitreous enamel as an undergraduate in Japan before studying silversmithing and metalwork at Camberwell College of Arts.

Over a decade as a senior costume jewellery designer for Erickson Beamon and Vicki Sarge sharpened her craft and, ultimately, her identity as a conceptual artist. In 2016 a Setting Out bursary at The Goldsmiths' Centre gave her the workshop to realise long-held sculptural ideas, and she has worked full-time on her practice ever since.

Today she makes enamel-on-copper sculpture alongside textile works hand-stitched from more than a thousand inherited vintage silk kimono swatches once used by her grandfather and mother. Guided by curiosity about culture, history and value, her work challenges conventional ideas of beauty and utility – and however dark or tender the story behind a piece, it tends to arrive with wit and a wink.

She is currently an artist-in-residence at Quinn Emanuel in London, and has exhibited across London, Madrid, Luxembourg and New Jersey.
