About Chris Brandell

Born and raised in New Rochelle, New York, Chris evolved her work over the past two decades in her private studio in Vienna, Virginia. Her work is influenced by the intersection of contemporary art and traditional artifacts, which she sees as an important storyline for elevated interior design.

Her non-representational paintings consist of linen or canvas organically layered with oil, gouache, gesso and molding paste while marks are made with pastel, crayon and graphite. Reflective of her edgy and minimal abstract style, her compositions are borne from the freedom of using and applying these materials in often non-conventional ways.

Chris’ work has produced a variety of series over the years, all with the common thread of providing a peaceful and contemplative moment to her viewers. Her work can be found in many private collections, and she is currently represented by: The White Room Gallery in Bridgehampton, NY; Sozo Gallery in Charlotte, North Carolina; Contemporain Fine Art Gallery in Baton Rouge, Louisiana; and Gallery 1930 in Birmingham, Alabama.

“I paint to reflect and share a feeling of wholeness and balance. For me, painting is mystical; it enables me to freely explore the contrast and integration of opposing life forces, connections and experiences. My polymorphic shapes are influenced by the later work of Julius Bissier while the washed layers of oil paint and line-work come from an intuitive space that I conjure in meditative moments.

I hope to execute my paintings anonymously so observers may form their own association with the composition. My practice is complete when I leave nothing off of the canvas, but the tension between the negative space and the color and drawing noise feels entirely profound. This reaction to the work is ultimately what I’m seeking for my viewers - for each person to experience, and integrate into their own existence, deep personal connections and subtle moments of peace.”
