Cristina Llanos

My artistic practice is based primarily on drawing on paper. I use drawing to transform photographic images into pictorial works, decontextualising them to open up new possibilities for interpretation.

I mainly work with watercolour because of the contrast it creates between the sensory beauty and apparent serenity of the technique and the conceptual complexity of the subject matter. This tension gives my work an ironic tone.

I work in series, becoming absorbed in specific topics that I investigate and explore until I either understand them or realise that I may never fully do so.

I collect images from the internet while also photographing the world around me: friends and family, objects that accompany me, and places I visit. This growing collection forms my personal visual archive, which I constantly draw on as a source of references for my work.

My practice focuses particularly on privacy and exhibitionism, exploring the irresistible urge to be visible, the cult of personal spectacle, the increasing fictionalisation of reality, and the gradual disappearance of the boundaries between public, private and intimate life.

I hold a degree in Fine Arts from the Complutense University of Madrid and a qualification in Illustration from Art School No. 10 in Madrid.
