Drawing has always been part of me, ever since I was a tiny tot... like the fairy-tale character, Hop-O’-My-Thumb, I would leave a trail of markings and doodlings behind me wherever I went. When I was a child, these markings were in crayon, felt pen, tempera, or watercolours. As I grew up, they became increasingly darker and bolder, and I turned to using charcoal, red chalk, and Indian ink. But when I discovered engraved markings, my exploratory journey into the world of drawing and painting came to a prolonged halt. The magic of engraving wholly captivated me from the very first time (in 1990) that I set foot in the chalcography laboratory at the Fine Arts Academy. Since that day, I have continued on this path with great passion and enthusiasm, striving to put into practice the teachings of a great artist – and my beloved grandfather – Giuseppe Pende, as well as those of Carlo Linati, a young, but highly expert printmaker at the Linati Stampatore printery in Milan. During my three years working with Carlo, I had the good fortune to learn the secrets not only of engraving but also of printing.
