Dan Skaggs

A former sculptor for 30 years, I transitioned to painting 4 years ago. Because of my background in sculpture (Master's Degree in Fine Arts), dealing with the traditional rectangular format of painting always left me just painting images and filling in the corners (background). My new work I call "OBJEXS", and consider them neither paintings nor sculptures I focus on the image itself and only the image. I do this by silhouette cutting the image out of flat 1/4" Artist Paned. I then proceed to paint the image in Acrylics and/or oils. The final step is to apply a high gloss epoxy top coat. this creates a certain tension between the flat shiny surface and the illusions of depth I create in painting my images. The images then float 1" off the wall which gives them their own unique physical presence.

Bachelor of arts in art education and a masters degree in fine art from CSULB.
I have taught in both the public schools as well as college.

30 year exhibitor at the Lagunas Beach Festival of Arts, I have work in many corporate and private collections throughout the US as well as Europe and South America.
