Daria Matiunina

I am a Ukrainian mixed-media artist living and working in Germany. My artworks begin with photographs that I take myself using an ordinary Android smartphone. For me, the essential element is not the technology, but the ability to see a moment, capture an emotion, and reveal a hidden story.

My creative journey is deeply connected with the human body. Through years of studying body awareness, movement, and restoration, I have learned to observe what often remains invisible: traces of experience, vulnerability, inner strength, and the connection between physical and emotional memory. This understanding has become an important part of my artistic language.

Photography is only the beginning of my process. I transform my own images through hand embroidery, threads, beads, and textile elements, turning a photograph into a unique tactile artwork. Every piece is created entirely by hand, and each stitch becomes an act of attention, care, and reconstruction.

My work explores themes of memory, home, migration, loss, resilience, the human body, and healing. I am interested not only in what we can see, but also in what remains beneath the surface, in memories, emotions, and personal experiences.
