Zsolt Rekai

I was born in 1956 in Hungary and I live in the city of Pécs, which is a significant central European city with vivid cultural life.
I studied law, political science, then my interest turned towards philosophy. However, this is all the tangle of inexplicable twists, as my main interest has been drawing and painting right from the start.
Spectacle painting in itself has never been an attraction for me. Dali’s work and Max Ernst’s world of images impressed me most.
I consider myself a surrealist, I am passionately studying the previous, underlying work of the preceding era.
I create oil paintings, but as a starting point I might use literally anything. It can be whatever draws my attention to it, like pictures of magazines, digital hybrids of the internet, whatever is typical for the era or is in connection with it.
I believe that in this delusion, which covers and withholds the present, now it is not enough to quest irracionalism in the language of the dreams – surrealism has always gone further than that. I am interested in existence and its truth.

It is only since 2013 that I have regular exhibitions.
