David O’Brien is a contemporary mosaic artist whose practice explores the intersection of art, design, luxury and contemporary culture. Working predominantly with hand-cut mosaic, O’Brien transforms familiar visual languages into meticulously crafted sculptural and wall-based works.
His work is concerned with ideas of identity, materiality, craftsmanship, fragmentation and reconstruction. By taking recognisable symbols and imagery apart and rebuilding them through mosaic, he explores how objects and visual identities acquire meaning and value.
O’Brien’s practice brings together the traditions of mosaic craftsmanship with contemporary references drawn from fashion, luxury, automotive culture and design. His ongoing work seeks to challenge the boundaries between fine art, craftsmanship and the visual language of iconic brands.
Self-taught contemporary mosaic artist, developing an independent practice over many years through sustained studio practice, experimentation and the study of traditional and contemporary mosaic techniques.
