Derya Bilir

Derya Bilir is a contemporary textile artist exploring the intersection of fiber, texture, and modern abstraction. With over 15 years of dedicated studio practice, her work reimagines traditional heritage through a refined contemporary lens. Based in Istanbul, Bilir’s artistic journey began with hand-crafting techniques passed down from her grandmother—foundations she now transforms into hybrid textile forms through tufting, punch needle, and hand embroidery.
Treating textile not merely as a material but as a sculptural surface, Bilir’s practice emphasizes depth, tactility, and quiet presence. Influenced by the philosophy of Wabi-Sabi, organic irregularity, and fluid form, her works carry a sense of timeless restraint. Each piece is composed of layered natural fibers such as wool, cotton, and linen, inviting the viewer into a subtle dialogue between touch, texture, and rhythm.
Her punch needle practice has been featured twice in Homespun Magazine (Australia), including a Best of the Best from Pinterest editorial selection and a five-page project feature published between 2020 and 2021.
