About Desdemona Varon

“a painter with a camera” – David Taylor
DESDEMONA VARON, is a multidisciplinary Italian artist.
While fine art photography is her primary art form, she also performs, makes sculpture and latest her forms of expression also include drawings.
Her art photography typically challenges beauty obsession and beauty conventions, yet at the same time, they display an intense passion for fashion. Desdemona has an eye for details. In charge of her art direction, she is into every single detail of her work :
storyboard, set design, styling, hair and makeup. As she says; " this is the only way I come to feel part of the work."
Her lights will bring you to the classic Italian paintings ...that’s why her first agent David Taylor called her “ A Painter with a camera “
Her passion for art, beauty and fashion have led her to work in the world's greatest capitals with the opportunity to collaborate with great Names and many Magazines.
such as VOGUE ITALIA, VELVET D di REPUBBLICA, DIEGO DELLA PALMA, DEBENHAMS, TONI & GUY, HJ'S BRITISH HAIRDRESSING AWARDS ETC
“Every single human being is a unique piece of art itself “ – Desdemona Varon
While the beauty in her artwork will catch your eye, she seeks to engage you to see beyond the surface; ‘there is always a strong deeper meaning; like with her beauty obsession work, she sought to bring the audience to reflect on our culture’s beauty obsession, which she considers a cross to bear.
She is trying to encourage people to increase their self-esteem, and she is speaking from profound personal experiences, as she in her teenage years suffered tragic consequences from a serious car accident, where she not only had to fight for her life but as she says ‘I had my beauty stolen and since I have had to fight for both beauty and self-esteem’.
Her early works show the process of her extreme struggle to get her self back together again.
Still today Desdemona takes inspiration from her personal struggle to re-embrace every single millimeter of herself, and as she expresses it
‘Still today there is a pain, but I have learned to “enjoy the silence”, however, I make sure it comes out in my work .
‘I have a desperate need to find beauty, whatever that means’ – Desdemona Varon
LABIRINTINTINTIMI / INSIDE OF ME (1994 - 2011)
is her first work, and it takes the audience on a journey through pain.
encompassing three elements:
- 17 years of photography “autoerotism” to “bleach “ the torment
- 17 years of self-portraits …. When the word Selfie did not exist yet!
Raw image captured with inappropriate kind of cameras ( web cams – mobile phones scan etc )
- 17 years journey through male brains - A journey through the web, through anonymous silent, where men of all social class wearing mask, unconventional kinky perverse is what they are looking for: a palliative treatment for a pernicious narcissism.
The follies of the submission, a million human mind shades.
COLOUR DESIGN ( 2010 part current)
this international advertisement campaign for Deborah Milano Make-up brand was initiated in 2010 after Desdemona met Sofia Bonetti
(co partner and pr for Deborah Milano)
This project allowed Desdemona to go through all aspects of beauty, faces, skin tones, makeup products and color pallet.
The first stage was to ‘face-hunt’.
Desdemona did so by exploring the multicultural population of Milan, choosing the most interesting faces.
The specular beauty Desdemona portrayed, sought to break down discrimination based on skin tone.
The work shows that we are all one human race, with beautiful color variation.
Milano Multicolour by Desdemona Varon, shows 40 of these portraits as a permanent exhibition inside the building of the Deborah Group, Milan.
Being an innovative brand DEBORAH always cooperate with "Salone del Mobile"
The International Furnishing Accessories Exhibition.
In 2012 Deborah group with The Fake Factory and Interni legacy® chose Desdemona`s images taken for Deborah, for a video installation at the STATALE UNIVERSITY of Milan.

BEAUTY OBSESSION 90 60 90 (2013 – current)

is work that explores the tension between beauty as perfection and beauty as obsession.
The work displays a Multitude of crucified pregnant BARBIE dolls, and the work has already been displayed even though it is still an embryo,
in the process of being realized in full human size.

The crucifixion of beauty
The obsession with the pursuit of perfection.
The obsession with the body, disease of unhappiness.
Ugliness, then, of the men, who are even capable of betraying their women,
even when they are carrying their children in their womb
the pain of beauty, that we carry on our shoulders.

SHE IS BEEN INVOLVED IN DIFFERENT EXHIBITIONS,
