Dominic Van Der Merwe

I am a Melbourne-based sculptor whose practice unites hand-crafted making with industrial design rigour.

My work is developed from concept through design, fabrication and installation — realised in stone, metal and composite materials. While grounded in material intuition, my practice is not defined by a single medium. Each project is resolved in the material best suited to its form, context and longevity.

With a background in industrial design, I approach sculpture through structure, proportion and spatial awareness. I am interested in forms that feel inevitable — shaped by balance, compression and the steady forces that govern the natural world. I work closely with clients, architects and fabrication partners to ensure projects are thoughtfully conceived and precisely realised.

Whether a refined interior object or a large-scale installation, my work explores material presence, proportion and the way form holds and defines space.
