Douglas Alvarez addresses the beauty of common objects, nature, and decaying infrastructure, and the role humans play visibly or invisibly in this environment. He can garner a feeling of nostalgia and complexity of emotion in the simplest of elements and spaces. Douglas employs many techniques to achieve his desired result. Viscous paint applications through palate knife are reminiscent of textural walls, while his brush application delineates the fine detail of a pair of reading glasses. The color palette Alvarez uses is inspired by muted tints of institutional environments and black and white photography. Beyond the canvas, Douglas recently extended to three-dimensional sculptural reliefs, interactive installations, and photography. Douglas Alvarez was born in Los Angeles. He is a product of a typical suburban upbringing, a childhood filled with skateboarding, arcade games, and junk food. Alvarez was accepted to a mediocre law school but pursued his passion for art instead, receiving dual degrees from California State University, Northridge in Art and Political Science.
