Artistic style and career
Early work: Inspired by relationships and autobiographical experiences, his early art focused on abstracting and expressing the human figure.
Comic artist: From 1979 to 1992, he worked as a cartoonist for publications like The Beano, Dandy, Topper, and Whizzer and Chips, as well as for Hanna-Barbera. This background later influenced his fine art, which began incorporating graphic lines and bright colours.
Artistic influences: His work is associated with movements such as Abstract Expressionism, Neo-Expressionism, and Urban Expressionism.
Figurative Abstraction: Over time, his style shifted to what he calls "Figurative Abstraction." He often reworks pieces repeatedly in a process of searching for their identity.
Later work: More recent work has become more outward-looking and expressive, with a focus on observing human behaviour and society.
