Elena Rato

My work extends in parallel through various artistic media, but painting has always been my main form of production. My growing interest in the performing arts has given rise to a painting style that is increasingly open, both technically and conceptually.

One the one hand, the kind of images I make has evolved over the years, based on an attitude not unlike action painting, which has gradually purified the forms and given rise to a self-contained painting style. It is no longer gestural, since it is not based on spontaneity or the expressiveness of the materials. Instead, it has developed a strong tendency to mimesis, to the simulation of gesture and its effects through the precision of drawing.
