Elizabeth Raine

Elizabeth Raine is a British artist and designer working primarily in fine art photography. Her practice explores colour, light, atmosphere and our relationship with the natural world.

Working while exploring wild Atlantic coastlines, Elizabeth captures fleeting moments of sea, sky, weather, reflection and changing light. These moments can be brief, yet carry a natural sense of stillness and calm. Her photographs seek to hold onto something of that feeling and invite the viewer to pause and experience the atmosphere of the landscape.

Her current series, **Atlantic Lines**, begins with original photographs taken along the coast. Elizabeth then looks closely within each image, selecting and enlarging small fragments of the original photograph. A detail of sea, sky, reflected light or movement becomes an image in its own right, revealing vivid colour, texture and atmosphere that can take on an almost watercolour-like, painterly quality.

The resulting works move between photography and abstraction. The painterly appearance comes from the magnified photographic detail itself, rather than from adding painted elements or recreating a watercolour effect. Familiar coastal landscapes become immersive compositions of colour, light, texture...
